How the semi-final was won
The two sides finished the regular season level on 40 points. Leeds had the better points difference, so the tie was played at AMT Headingley.
It was 12-12 at half-time. The club’s report sets out the scoring:
- James Bentley scored first for Warrington, after Matty Ashton won George Williams’ kick and Toby King gave the final pass.
- Ryan Hall replied for Leeds ten minutes later.
- Jake Connor put Leeds ahead on 32 minutes.
- Luke Yates levelled before the break with his first try for the club.
There were no more points until the 65th minute. Williams was knocked down off the ball as he chased a kick, and Ewan Irwin kicked the penalty that won the game.
Leeds had two late chances. A Connor 40/20 was overturned when Warrington’s captain’s challenge showed a knock-on in the build-up. Then, after the final hooter, Connor’s 60-metre penalty attempt fell short.
Sam Powell, who retires at the end of this season, was on the bench. Irwin kicked both of Warrington’s goals. The Super League has also shortlisted him for its Young Player award.

Getting there from Warrington
The club is running official coaches. They leave from Dallam Lane, next to the Halliwell Jones Stadium, at 3.30pm on Saturday 3 October. They come back after the final, with time left for a trophy presentation if there is one.
Seats cost £15 for members and £20 for everyone else. Book online, call 01925 248888 or go to the club store.
For anyone making their own way, the league’s spectator guide says:
- Turnstiles open at 4pm, two hours before kick-off.
- Old Trafford tram stop is about a five-minute walk. The Trafford Park line stops at the Imperial War Museum and Wharfside are also close.
- Talbot Road is closed from Great Stone Road to White City on 3 and 4 October.
- Stadium parking is pre-paid only and limited.
- The stadium is cashless, so bring a card for food and drink.
- Bags bigger than A5 (14.8cm by 21cm) have to go in a paid bag drop, which costs £5. Pushchairs are not allowed in the stadium and go in the bag drop too.
- Turn your phone brightness to 100% before scanning your ticket at the turnstile.
What it means for you
If you want to go, buy online now: there is no box office in Warrington for this one. The club has already sold more than it did for either of its last two Grand Finals, and said on Saturday that lower-bowl seats were limited.
Expect trains and trams into Manchester to be busy on the day. The league advises checking before you travel and leaving plenty of time. Anyone driving from Warrington should allow for the Talbot Road closure. Our roadworks and travel page carries what is closed closer to home.
