The Warrington Wire is an independent news and information site for Warrington. We report what the public record shows and keep the information people look up most accurate and in one place.
The borough
Warrington town centre and the neighbourhoods around it, then Stockton Heath, Grappenhall, Appleton and Lymm to the south of the Mersey, Culcheth and Birchwood to the north east, and Penketh and Great Sankey to the west. About 215,000 people live in the borough. The river and the ship canal cut it in two, and anyone who has waited at a swing bridge knows how much local life turns on that.
Why one council matters here
Warrington has been a unitary authority since 1998, which means there is no county council to share the blame with. Planning, bins, highways, licensing, council tax, schools and social care all sit in the same building, and the evidence behind those decisions is published in registers and committee papers that few people ever open. Reading them and writing them up plainly is the main job of this site.
What we work from
The council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Mersey and the local brooks, and company filings in The Gazette. Every fact links to the original, and where a record is ambiguous we say so instead of picking the more interesting reading.
