Warrington sits between Manchester and Liverpool and belongs to neither. The Mersey runs through the middle of it and the Manchester Ship Canal runs alongside, which is why so much of getting about here depends on a handful of bridges. Around the town are Stockton Heath, Grappenhall, Appleton, Lymm, Culcheth, Birchwood, Penketh and Great Sankey.

The Warrington Wire reports from the borough’s own record. Warrington has been a unitary authority since 1998, so planning, bins, roads, licensing, council tax and schools are all decided by one body, and that body publishes the evidence where hardly anybody reads it. We read it and write down what it says, with a link to the document on every fact.

Where to begin

  • News: the public record, including planning news across the borough. The government has raised Warrington’s housing requirement to 1,067 homes a year from December 2028, a 28% increase, and the Local Plan is being rewritten to find the land.
  • Local Info: house prices ward by ward, where the borough median is £250,000 but Appleton’s is £450,000 and Fairfield and Howley’s £140,000; roadworks and travel, including which roads are shut tonight and how often the swing bridges really stop you; and trains to London, 1hr 48 from Bank Quay.
  • What’s On: what is on in Warrington, Lymm and Stockton Heath, plus things to do with verified prices.
