Warrington hooker Sam Powell retires at 34 and joins the Wolves coaching staff for 2027. One of six players leaving, with Hull KR at home on 19 September.

Sam Powell will retire at the end of this season and stay at Warrington Wolves as a coach. The club announced it on Thursday morning. He is 34, and he has been playing professionally for 15 years. (Warrington Wolves, 10 September 2026)

The hooker joins Sam Burgess’s coaching staff ahead of the 2027 season. The club says he will “pass all his experience on to the next generation”.

He is not finished on the pitch yet. Powell started at hooker the following night as Warrington beat Toulouse Olympique 26-14 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in front of 10,667 people. That result secured third place in Super League. (Warrington Wolves match report, 11 September 2026)

What he said

Powell gave one statement, through the club.

“Reflecting on my career, I can hold my head high and say I’ve given it my all,” he said. “I’m very proud of representing two top Super League clubs over my time playing.”

“Firstly, to my hometown club, Wigan where I spent most of my career. Some very special moments for my family and I.”

“Then onto the Wire, where I’ve met some top people and really enjoyed being a part of this club. My time here isn’t coming to an end just yet.”

Six are leaving, and he is the one who stays

Powell is the only one of the six the club has said will stay on in another role.

The numbers behind 15 seasons

The club published his career totals with the announcement. Add them together and the scale of it is clear.

  • 284 appearances and 63 tries for Wigan Warriors, from a try-scoring debut against Hull FC in 2012
  • 74 appearances and seven tries for Warrington across three seasons, counted up to the day of the announcement
  • That is 358 games for his two clubs, and 359 once Friday night against Toulouse is added
  • 70 tries in total

Almost half his Warrington games came in his first year. He played all 33 competitive matches in the 2024 season, when the Wire reached the Challenge Cup Final and the play-offs.

He came through Wigan St Pats and Hindley ARLFC, then the Wigan Warriors youth system, where he won an Academy Grand Final. He played for England Knights on their tour of Papua New Guinea in 2018.

Why the timing is interesting

Powell moves into coaching at the exact point Warrington’s own academy is producing more first-team players than it ever has.

A record 12 homegrown players featured in Friday’s match, the most in a single Super League game in the club’s history. The previous record was 11, set against Salford on 29 August 2025. Two more debutants were handed Heritage Numbers on Friday. Pat Irwin became 1231 and Dan Coop 1232. Ewan and Pat Irwin also became the 11th pair of brothers to play Super League for the Wolves.

The club’s description of Powell’s new job points the same way. It says his influence already “extended far beyond the pitch”, helping drive standards and guiding the club’s emerging talent. That is now the job rather than the side effect.
